Understanding dementia:

A person living with dementia goes through a lot of physical, emotional and psychological changes that can have a drastic impact on their life and their loved ones.

Symptoms

Dementia is associated with a loss of memory and issues with thinking. This can lead to a loss of self-esteem or confidence and difficulties in carrying out day-to-day tasks like brushing teeth, showering and eating. These symptoms can also have an impact on their family as seeing your loved one’s attitude change towards you is painful to witness and adapt to.

Support system:

The loved ones need to be understanding and patient while interacting with the person living with dementia.

Secondly, carers also need to be cautious and calm when dealing with a client whose behavior might be challenging due to dementia.

Reach out to people who can support a person with dementia:

Another way you can support the fight again dementia is by reaching out to people who can support you! Yes, you heard it right. Dementia is a special type of illness that varies on how it affects a person. Therefore, different types of dementia can need different ways of support.

So, if you find out that your loved one has dementia, your first step is to reach out to someone who knows about dementia and can provide appropriate support to you and your loved one.

This can be the GP, a dementia specialist, a support group, or a home care company. They will not only help you to understand the situation but would also guide you on how to approach the care needed for your loved one.

Most often, a carer is recommended to provide the correct support that your loved one might need and we at Blue Angel Care can provide that. We are a homecare company and we provide specialist dementia training to our carers so that the right support is provided to your loved one.

Donate to a support group:

Due to the high occurrence of dementia in our population, lots of support groups and charities have been set up to fight against dementia. One such charity is alzheimers.org.uk which has been actively campaigning to raise awareness about dementia.

So, a donation towards the society would help them to fund research about dementia, care for people who have dementia, and provide the much-needed awareness. So, if you want to make a change – you can start by donating just £2 today.

Run a marathon:

If you want to support a cause and be healthy, this one is for you! A large number of organizations have been organizing marathon events wherein they ask you to set up a fundraiser and run a certain number of miles to complete a marathon.

Sounds fun right? Well, here is the best thing though… they also provide you with free goodies to show that you support dementia awareness and the goodies can include anything from pens, caps, t-shirts to winning a medal.

So, what are you waiting for? Put on your shows and sign up for a marathon now.
